About TRS
Established in 1937, the Teacher Retirement System of Texas provides retirement and other benefits to those employed at public-schools, colleges, and universities supported by the state of TX.
Your eligibility to receive a retirement benefit is based on your “Tier.” There are currently 6 different Tiers. Your Tier is based on when you started employment.
In most Texas K-12 school districts, employees do not pay into Social Security. TRS and Social Security are similar in that for many individuals, depending solely on them for a comfortable retirement proves challenging due to increases in cost of living over time. Many Texas employees are unaware there is no set annual cost of living adjustment for TRS retirees.
